While we’re certainly spoiled for choice when it comes to streaming services in Australia, we don’t have access to everything. Some platforms, like Hulu and Max (AKA The Streaming Service, formerly known as HBO Max), are only available if you live in the United States. But why should the Yanks get all the fun?

While you may not live in the US, that doesn’t mean you can’t access US-only streaming services. By using a VPN you can change your IP address and bypass the geo-restrictions of US-only platforms like Hulu or Max, and even access the non-Australian libraries of other services like Netflix.

Here’s how to access Hulu, Max and US Netflix with a VPN in Australia.

What is a VPN and how does it work?

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is software that allows you to mask your data when you surf the Internet. Once connected to a VPN, your browsing data passes through the provider’s server and is encrypted. Once someone is connected to a VPN and were to gain access to your browsing data (whether it’s your ISP or a malicious third party), he or she won’t be able to see what you’re doing.

VPNs are a great way to improve your online security and privacy. They are especially useful in this regard when using public Wi-Fi.

Although we’re mainly focusing on the United States here, a VPN allows you to change your IP address anywhere in the world.

If you’re looking for a VPN and aren’t sure where to start, PureVPN currently has a discount offer on its standard plan. With this deal you can save as much as 83 percent on a two-year subscription and score an extra three months. That means you pay $54.95 for 27 months, instead of $322.65 (which works out to $2.03 per month). That works out to around AU$3 per month, which, as far as VPN deals go, is one of the best value deals you’ll find.

You can sign up for a PureVPN subscription here. Even if you don’t plan on using the VPN for streaming, this is still a great way to keep your browsing data safe.

Hulu is a streaming service owned by Disney, and while some content makes its way to Australia under the Star label on Disney+, that doesn’t happen to everything. Some Hulu shows are also licensed to other Australian streaming platforms. If you want access to the entire catalog of Hulu titles, all in one place, you’ll have to go to the source. But for that you also need a US-based payment method.

Here’s how to use a VPN to access Hulu in Australia:

  • Get a VPN subscription
  • Connect to a server located in the United States
  • Sign up for a Hulu gift card
  • Sign up for a Hulu account by redeeming this gift card

Similar to Hulu, some Max content is also spread across other Australian streaming services. A Max subscription therefore gives you the advantage of having everything in one place. Again, just like with Hulu, you’ll need a US-based payment method to get a Max subscription.

Here’s how to use a VPN to access Max in Australia:

  • Get a VPN subscription
  • Connect to a server located in the United States
  • Sign up for a US-based virtual prepaid card
  • Your ‘Country/Region’ sets this to the United States

  • Get a VPN subscription and download the app on your streaming device
  • Connect to a server located in the United States
  • Log in to Netflix
